The Tropicana Pool

My primary intended purpose behind this year's fall vacation was for it to be a celebration of my pretty girl's birthday. The grand gift (to both of us, as it turned out) was our stay in the historic Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, which would include a dip in the hotel's Tropicana Pool. This pool is significant because it was originally painted by the legendary artist, David Hockney, who painted dozens of pictures of swimming pools and also painted the floors of many actual swimming pools. The Tropicana remains the only commercial swimming pool that he painted, by the way.

I only know about the Tropicana because my pretty girl is so smart and knows pretty much everything about art, architect and culture. Like much of what I know about the aforementioned, she's the one who introduced me to Hockney and because she speaks with such passion and authority, her appreciation for his work rubbed off on me. This made it even more of an imperative that we not only stay in the Hollywood Roosevelt, but also that we swim in this pool while we're there! I set several reminders to pack our bathing suits and it was so worth it. Our swim in the pool would be our second day in L.A., when we woke up early (actually, she woke up early and then woke me up) and the first words I remember hearing was that we've got to get in the pool before it gets busy. This was about 6:45 AM, by the way. Minutes later she mentioned that someone had just entered the pool. I got up and we were poolside by 7:05 AM.

We spent about 40 minutes in the pool and I made sure to get pictures and video of us. I love documenting my time spent with this beautiful woman! The video of us taking turns jumping into the water are especially fun and I admit that her leap was much better than mine. She was pure joy to watch and seeing her happy made me even happier than I already was. I do not know how that's even possible but somehow, it was.
