This evening I was watching a YouTube video and on the right of the screen was a video on The Monkees. I know that this video came up due to our many recent conversations about Laurel Canyon and my research into that time period. Of all Laurel Canyon’s oddities, The Monkees is the one that I find most interesting because it had never occurred to me that they had ever spent time in southern California. Their music doesn’t really have that southern California sound (well, a few songs do), so that’s why I was surprised to learn of their time there.
Beneath that first Monkees video was another Monkees video, but this one was a lyric video for I’m A Believer. I played it and and as soon as I did, I lit up. Not just because of the song, but also (mostly) because of the scenery. This video was filmed in Joshua Tree National Park and I know exactly where in the park this is! It’s about 30 minutes into the park if you’ve entered through Twentynine Palms and headed west. As I watched the video, I thought about the numerous times that I’ve driven by this very spot and then I thought that this needs to be documented. Thus this post.
Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer, I couldn't leave her if I tried
