The word harem, is often mistaken for the Arab word, haram, which means 'forbidden by God,' but this is not the correct word or the proper definition. In ancient Middle East cultures, a harem was an area of the house that was reserved solely for the female family members of the house, but in the homes of wealthy men, the harem would also be a dwelling for female servants whose job it was to serve at the pleasure their masters. In many cultures, a prized harem girl would be given high social status in the household and be highly-praised and cherished by her master.
