Pretty girl,

I initially sent this to you along with accompanying songs on 6/28/2014, which was the day after we had sex for the first time. I thought it would be appropriate to repost it today (6/28/2022) as today is the eight year anniversary. I think I might make a habit of reposting these anniversary posts every year.

1. Life Is Better, Q-Tip featuring Norah Jones. Q-Tip was the lead rapper for the 90s hip-hop group, A Tribe Called Quest. I saw him live back in 2008 while he was touring in support of the album that this song is featured on. Life is Better is actually a love song about hip-hop, but the chorus could be about anyone who feels blessed and fortunate to have a particular person in their life. It makes me think of you because I’m so happy we are together. I wasn’t miserable or even sad before we met, but ever since June 16, my life is even more awesome than it already was.

Life is better now that I found you, life is better now that I found you

2. Take Me With You, Prince: This song is 30 years old as of this year and still sounds great. It makes me picture Prince and Appalonia on the back of his motorcycle but also makes me think of me and you meeting somewhere before work. And as you leave, I just want to go with you everywhere you are and breathe the same air that you’re breathing.

I don’t care where we go, I don’t care what we do. I don’t care pretty baby, just take me with you

3. Sex-O-Matic Venus Freak, Macy Gray: Gray’s first album, On How Life Is, came out in late 1999. I remember it well because just a few months later, I went on my first deployment, this one being a seven month trip to the Mediterranean on a big U.S. Navy boat. Fortunately, we were able to visit most of the countries along that sea se and I spent a full week in Venice. One day while walking through that city, Ic ame across a small shop that sold blown glass. Inside they were playing Macy Gray’s “Sex-O-Matic Venus Freak” and I couldn’t leave until the song was over. I ended up buying a glass figurine of a Great Dane from there that I still have to this day. Now this song not only reminds me of Venice but also of how much I want to pound you into the earth with my cock. I don’t have a huge sex drive but goddamn, I w ant to take your clothes off as soon as I see you and fuck you silly.

I am a sex-o-matic Venus freak when I’m with you. And I won’t stop it, only when you tell me to.

4. Wish You Were Here, Incubus: This song came out when I lived in Indianapolis and I saw the band perform live in support of the album. The album (Morning View) was one that I listened to constantly during my second deployment to Iraq in 2005. It always relaxed me after a stressful day and still has the same effect on me even now. The song isn’t necessarily about a lover and in fact, could be about a member of the same sex. In my case, it is about you, my lover. The sand makes me think of our little spot beside the dried river bed at Whitewater Preserve.

I dig my toes into the sand. The ocean looks like a diamond strewn across a blue blanket. I lean against the wind, pretend that I am weightless and in that moment I am happy. Happy.

5. Delicious, Semisonic: This song came out when I was in college and I still have that original CD. There is no mystery about what this song is about. This man is infatuated with this woman and finds her irresistible. Here, he uses the term “delicious” to mean “irresistible.” I would use it figuratively and literally. I have tasted your skin and your tongue and you are definitely delicious.

You’re delicious when you call me, I’ve got nothing left to wait for. You’re delicious when you see me, I’ve got nothing left to pray for.

6. I Wanna Be Your Lover: This is one of Prince’s early songs and it came out in 1979. My friend’s father owned the album and we would sneak and listen to it when we hung out. I liked the song, but couldn’t understand why anyone would want to be someone’s lover. Hell, I didn’t even understand what a lover was, but I knew it had the word “love” in it and that meant kissing and cooties. Now, 43 years later, I know what this song is about. I wanted to be your lover from the minute I saw you.

I wanna be your lover I wanna be the only one that makes you come running

I wanna be your lover I wanna turn you on, turn you out All night long, make you shout

Oh, lover, yeah! I wanna be the only one you come for.

7. My Time, Minus The Bear: Minus the Bear is a band from Seattle, WA that, despite proficient artists, will never make it big. That’s better for those of us who like good music and don’t need our band members to look pretty like Adam Levine. This song came out in 2010 and didn’t get nearly the attention that it deserves. It’s about a man’s lady and how he can’t wait to satisfy her. The song writers sings it with all the confidence of a man who knows that he’s capable of pleasing his woman. At just 13 days in, we had not had sex yet, but I KNEW that I would do whatever it takes to satisfy you, even if that meant watching videos on how to eat pussy.

Turn off the lights and touch me in the dark. Fade into the feeling, whisper in my ear what you want, what you need. Tell me my name, tell me my name again, again, again, again

8. 40 Day Dream, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros: This group knows how to throw a party and I experienced this in 2010 at a concert they gave in L.A. In this song, he’s singing about a girl who is so amazing that he has made him question if what he’s seeing and experiencing is real. I can totally relate! When you and I were just texting and sending each other pictures, I was so sure that I was being catfished by some cruel guy: I’d never seen anyone as pretty as you are! I knew women like you existed, but I never expected for one to have interest in me. Sometimes I’m not really sure that you are human, woman.

Hey, I been sleeping for 60 days and nobody better pinch me, bitch I swear I’ll go crazy!

9. Raspberry Beret, Prince: The 80s were definitely Prince’s sexiest time. He made good music after the 80s, but it was just…less. Less sexy, less cohesive, less…good. This is a song that I didn’t appreciate when it came out 37 years ago, but now I know just what he was talking about. He was talking about a girl that blew his mind and made him lust like never before. This is the first song that came to mind yesterday as we lay on that blanket after having sex. (note: I wrote all of this the day after the first time we had sex)

They say the first time ain’t the greatest, but I tell ya, if I had the chance to do it all again…I wouldn’t change a stroke cuz baby I’m the most, with a girl as fine as she was then…

10. Just Like Heaven, The Cure I told you about my highschool girlfriend, Amy, who dressed in all black and listened to The Cure. She had a rat named Pestolence that I pretended to like so much that I too got a rat. I can’t remember what I named mine though. The truth is that I hated that I didn’t care for the rat and was not at all sad when he chewed through my radio cord and electrocuted himself. I hated The Cure, too, but years later, I’d listen to them and like some of their songs, this one in particular. It reminds me of when I pull up next to you and I see you smile and I just want to look at your pretty face.

Show me show me show me how you do that trick! The one that makes me scream she said. The one that makes me laugh, she said. Threw her arms around my neck. Show me how you do it and I promise you, I promise that I’ll run away with you

11. Pink Cashmere, Prince: Prince wrote this song sometime in the 90s for a girl who he’d fallen in love with. In true, weird Prince fashion, he had an actual coat of pink cashmere made for her but in the song he uses the coast as a metaphor for the great lengths that he’d go to have her. It reminds me of all the things we did to see each other in the beginning, especially. I was desperate to see you!

I’m making you a coat of pink cashmere. You got to know how I feel about you, how I always want you near I’m making you a coat of pink cashmere. I’m counting every minute of every hour ‘til you are here.
